In greater or lesser degree, aren't the grown-ups there all along? Greater in Coot Club, lesser in We Didn't Mean... The children may try to live in a bubble, but they can't escape the reality that they need people to do things for them all the time. And sometimes the drama comes from tensions with grown-ups, as in Mr Jemmerling, George Owdon and the Hullabaloos, and Squashy Hat/Mrs Tyson (not to mention crazed desperadoes and pirates straight out of Conrad).
