I never thought of PD and ML as "made-up" stories. Weren't they ALL made- up stories? It was only when I read those two as an older child, that I realized Titty had imagined them to while away the time when they weren't having real adventures. Even PD and ML had an air of reality for me, just as much as the other "real" stories. All equally believable. For me, Susan's distress in WDMTGTS was so shocking because she was real and they were real tears she was shedding. If Susan, the anchor, the bedroock, went to pieces like that, then the situation must, indeed, be extremely serious.
