Nice to hear from you, Fiona - I shall cross you off my 'Lurkers' blacklist . .
No but seriously, 'Lakeland Pedlar' has some fascinating photos in it, and Owen is right about strong connections with AR's locations and characters. Here are some charcoal burners. The accompanying text says:
'Frank Major and his workmen pose outside their turf hut in Holme Well Woods in 1908. A burn could last 2, 3 or 4 days. The men slept in their clothes and at times their wives lived in the huts with them. On the far right, Ned Haywood is eating a fiddle pasty, in local parlance 'summat fiddled from nowt', usually the pastry ends with currants, jam or mincemeat.'
(NB - to avoid any possible copyright issues, I'll remove all 'Pedlar' photos in a couple of days. However, if Tarboarders find them of interest, I can temporarily post links to a few more.)
