I have just bought an old set of the S&A series books including some 1st editions. The covers are in a bad state and I would like to make new covers by scanning the old covers and various other sources including copying relevant pictures from within the books and reporducing them as appropriate on the cover. I intend to use Photoshop to do this work. Early experiments indicate that it will be possible to produce a brand-new cover from very tatty covers, the result being virtually indistinguishable from the original cover when new. All text on the back and inner flaps would be reproduced using fonts as close as possible to the original. Font sizes and layout would also be identical to the original.

My question is: does anyone know (with authority) whether I would be allowed to do this for my own collection with regards to copyright? Would I also be allowed to offer the computer files for others to use without breaching any copyright?
